Verification of Competency

Verification of Competency (VOC) is a method of assessment that assists employers to meet OHS requirements and ensure staff are competent to operate equipment or perform a task. New national OHS harmonisation laws, effective January 2012, bring greater importance to employers due diligence and obligation to ensure an individual has “current competency”.

Assessing for Verification of Competency enables businesses to confirm that their employees are competent in their skills and using equipment. It is commonly used in many industries for pre-employment checks, contractual arrangements or site requirements.

No longer is just holding a ticket or qualification enough for an employer to believe an individual is competent.

Verification of Competency enforcement is new for industry and is subject to interpretation. Working with industry leading clients, Major developed a formal process that allows for flexibility to meet client needs whilst maintaining a high standard of assessment. Assessors are industry experts holding all relevant qualifications combined with years of experience.

VOC PROCESS:
Assessments can take place on the job or at a Major facility to limit the impact to productivity onsite. Our assessments include theory questions, verbal questioning and visual observational/demonstration one on one.

Participants must provide their licence or relevant unit of competency prior to VOCs being conducted. This along with relevant work documents or logbooks will give a guide to what level of competence they should hold.

Outcome:
Client – (individual or employer) will receive assessment summary that can be used as evidence for currency and can be kept with resume, training records, etc. Major will provide a licence size card stating the VOC conducted and validity for 5 years to participant.

What if the person it not competent?
Client – (individual or employer) would be advised of any additional/gap training required before any further assessment could be conducted.

Duration:
Each assessment takes approximately 1-2½hrs and will depend on type of plant and/or requirement of employer/site.

Pricing:
$295 for first; and $195 thereafter for any additional assessments.
Day rates are available and provide an economical way for employers to complete large numbers of staff.
